As the sales of Mazda RX-8 to end after 2011, rumors have started erupting about Mazda planning to unveil the successor of RX-7 sports car in 2013. As per the insiders, the car will be christened as RX-9. The successor will retain the rotary Renesis technology employed by its predecessors and the RX-8. On the other, the Japanese automaker is to explore wide range of options to enhance performance yet deliver improved fuel economy.

Powering the RX-9, as per Autocar sources, will be a new Renesis 16X rotary engine which is a 1.6 Liter twin rotor motor capable of delivering 350-hp and 215 lb-ft of torque. With its design language inspired by the Nagare design language, Maza will keep RX-9s output around 250-hp to stick the price-tag close to $25,000.
